UC500 FXS Port COnfiguration for digital postage meter

I am having an issue with a similar device, a digital postage meter.  I would assume that it operates similar to a credit card machine.  I reviewed the doc that you sited above but I still could not get the unit to connect.  I am not sure of the proper debug's and or the information that I am looking for in the debugs.  Any assistance would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Mike

Yes, this is a similar issue to the first thread.  Probably the first thing to do is check with your SIP service provider to see if they have modem passthrough enabled in their network.  If they don't have it setup at their end, then there is not much you can do.  The best you can do is force the use of an uncompressed codec (ie g711) and see how it goes.

The alternative if you have any analog or digital PSTN line connected to your system is to configure an extra pattern in the Outgoing dial plan that forces calls from the postage meter out the PSTN line, thus bypassing the VoIP trunk.

If you want to do detailed debugging of this, I'd suggest you log a TAC case and get an engineer on the phone to work this through with you.  Unfortunately, in the absence of modem passthrough or relay, supporting modem connections over VoIP is always tricky.

Cheers,

Dave.

Thats actually a good thought.  I am not using a SIP provider but a full PRI (23channel) and no extra PSTN circuits.  I informed XO that the number in question was fax.  I will check to verify if there is anything they need to address on there side for this.  The fax works just fine it's this stupid postal machine that is causing all this BS.

Cheers

If it is an ISDN service, then we are on much more solid ground.  Couple of things to look for:

- In CCA, look at Monitor > Reports > T1/E1/BRI Status and have a look and see if you are getting any errors at the physical or framing level.  If the counters to look at aren't obvious (and they are not really), grab a couple of snapshots separated in time by several minutes and post them here and we can have a look.

- If you are comfortable telneting to the UC500 and using the command line, can you capture the output of 'show network-clocks'?  I don't expect to see anything here other than confirmation that clocking is set up properly, but it is good to double check.

Cheers,

Dave.

Here is a cut of the show network-clocking

  Network Clock Configuration
  ---------------------------
Priority      Clock Source    Clock State     Clock Type

     1          T1 0/2/0        GOOD            T1
     7          Backplane       GOOD            PLL

  Current Primary Clock Source
  ---------------------------
Priority      Clock Source    Clock State     Clock Type

     1          T1 0/2/0        GOOD            T1

I am not familiar with the CCA.  I ususally use the CLI and CUE GUI for all my config's.

voice service voip
allow-connections h323 to h323
allow-connections h323 to sip
allow-connections sip to h323
allow-connections sip to sip
supplementary-service h450.12
modem passthrough nse payload-type 101 codec g711ulaw maximum-sessions 1
sip
  no update-callerid

Ok, the clock is being sourced correctly.  Can you post the output from 'show controller t1 0/2/0' - preferably two sets of output taken several minutes apart.  What I'm looking for is to see if there are any errors on the line, since a low error rate will not be noticeable on voice calls but can definitely cause modem problems.

By the way, whereabouts are you located using a T1?  We don't really use T1's in Australia or New Zealand.

Cheers,

Dave.

I didnt see much in the out put but take a look.  I am in the good old USA.  Lots of T1's and DS3's.

Ok, that's all clean.

So a couple of obvious questions I should have asked earlier:

- Does the meter work if plugged into a regular telephone line straight from the telco? (I assume so, but you never know)

- Also, what do you see when you try to make a call?  Does the remote end answer and then the call drops, or does it never answer?

Cheers,

Dave.

yes the unit works on a regular PSTN line.  I was going to put a butt set on the line to see what the unit was dialing.  I am going to contact XO to make sure they are not messing with the signaling and then may be a TAC call.

The other possibility is to make sure you are not running afoul of the unit just dialing the number without having an outside access code specified.  It would also be worth plugging the tester in between the meter and the UC500 and just listening to see how far the call progresses - ie, offhook, dial tone, dialing, ring back, answer, modem tones etc.  If the connection is failing in this path somewhere, then we can dig into it further, as that will give us some clues.  If the connection is faling during modem training or during data transfer then it gets harder.  There are a couple of possibilities that spring to mind such as mismatched line impedence on the analog connection between the meter and the UC500, or audio distortion due to incorrect gain settings, but I would expect you would hear audible symptoms on normal voice calls then as well.

Cheers,

Dave.

Well that though actually crossed my mind but the fax machine is attached to the same line and it does not require a outside access digit, in their case an '8'.  I think that I am going to place a monitor inline and see what the unit is putting out.  The kicker is the fax that operates on the same FXS port works just fine inbound and outbound.  If you have some suggestions on the impedence and audio, I am all ears.

If the fax is working on the same port, then that suggests that the levels and so forth are probably correct, though it is always possible that the postage meter has an incorrect impedence setting for example.  But again, that's pretty far fetched.  I'll be interested to see what you get from monitoring the line.

Cheers,

Dave.

Well just a little update.  I have been working with TAC a very nice fellow name Berry in NC.  We have found that the postal device is dialing 1800 (other digits are not relitive to this issue).  We were performing some dumps and debugs and found that the UC is only seeing 180xxxxxxx.  The 00 are being interpriated as 0.  We decieded to do a incoming translation of /180xxxxxxx/ /1800xxxxxxx/.  Please not the real digits have been replaced with x's.  So I hope to have a test done on Monday and I will post the final results and a bit more info.

Cheers

It sounds like the gap between the dialed digits is not large enough for the UC500 to reliably detect it, so the two zeros are detected as a signle digit.  I'm guessing there are not patterns of two or more identical digits in succession in the rest of the number so that this is the only place it gets missed.  One thing you could try is to look and see if there is a setting on the postage meter that controls the speed at which it dials or even that controls the gap between the digits.

Otherwise we might need to capture an audio trace of the meter dialing and see if we can do anything to tune the UC500 to match what the meter is doing.

Cheers,

Dave.

Well, the issue has been resolved.  Yes you would be correct about the digit timing.  The issue was that when the unit went to dial, 1800xxxxxxx.  The clients AA is 180.  So you might guess where this is going.  Basically when the unit was attempting to dial out and it was just getting the AA.  I have no way to instruct the meter to dial an "8" for outside number prefix.  TAC and I tried a few different translation rules and prefix's.  We decided to change the extension number of the AA and VM.  Issue was resolved.  The lesson here, watch what your extesion plans are, use 4 digits or more and dont let the client beat you into make 3 digit extensions.

Cheers.
