2 ports for stateful failover

Is there a need to dedicate 2 ports on the ASA to allow for a stateful failover?

According to this, the answer is yes:

I recall configuring this with only one port.

No you don't have to. If you read the section following the diagram in the link you posted you will see that you can use the same link for both LAN and state failover.
