about identity in main or aggressive mode

Hello,

From the configuring guide for ASA, there are 4 identities for ISAKMP phase1 negotiation:

Address

Automatic

Hostname

Key ID

Then, it also says the above is true for all VPN scenarios except L2L VPN connections in main mode that authenticate with pre-shared keys.

Does anybody can explain the limitation of identity for main mode L2L vpn with pre-shared keys?

Thanks in advance,

-Alejin

Re: about identity in main or aggressive mode

Hi Alejin,

Can you post the link where are you looking up this information so I can understand the complete background.

In L2L using Pre-shared Keys Or Certificates using MM the Identity is sent in the MM5 packet (i.e. 5th Exchange in Main Mode).

When using "crypto isakmp identity.." command

1. address --> ASA's IP address is sent in the ID field. This is the address on the interface where Crypto Map is applied.

2. hostname --> ASA's hostname is sent.

3. Auto --> IP Address is sent if using Pre-shared Keys and Cert DN is sent when using Certificates for Authentication

4. Key-ID --> You can specify your own string to be sent as the Identity.

Below is some more information

Thanks,

Naman
