AnyConnect VPN Server Contact Problem - Mac

Hi - I'm using Cisco AnyConnect 3.1.05152 on a MacBook to connect to a univeristy vpn server but it consistently fails to contact the server and just times out. I've been able to connect only a few times by refreshing my network location and gaining a new IP address but this hardly ever works. I'm connected to the university LAN via a CAT5e ethernet cable which automatically assigns the IP address, Subnet Mask, Router and DNS server in my Network settings. I'm sure the ethernet connection is working since I can access only one website to download the VPN program and when I can connect to the vpn it stays connected but the problem is that the vpn connect consistently does not connect and says "connection attempt has timed out, please verify internet connectivity". Please if you have any input on what the problem is, it would be very much appreciated. Is it just a Network settings issue, or the ethernet cable or a server problem? Thanks.
