Application Inspection / Fixup

Is there a document anywhere that states precisely what actions a PIX/ASA/FWSM takes when application inspection is enabled for e-mail. I am looking for both "inspect smtp" and inspect "esmtp" actions.

I have done some searching and cannot find any information myself.
