Is there a way to turn this off for a

particular peer like there is in the PIX

XAUTH is an optional authentication feature and you need to enable it explicitly on the VPN gateway device. Use the "noxauth" option in the command;

crypto isakmp key keystring address peer-address [mask] [no-xauth]

This will disable the XAUTH for that particular peer.
