Ipsec and Ike

Dear All,

Can anyone brief me the difference between the fuction of IPSEC and IKE used in pix for configuring VPN.

Hi Jitesh,

IKE is the generic name for Phase 1 in the VPN setup. This is the part when the devices are agreeing on some settings and generates some keys then authenticates each other (the isakmp key if preshared is used, or the digital certificates).

IPSEC is the Phase 2, the devices are authenticated and they will create the keys to encrypt the traffic flow (crypto maps).
