Juniper FW not sending traffic through VPN until ASA sends traffic

This problem is driving us nuts.  The two devices (Cisco ASA5550 and Juniper 5gt) can establish a VPN tunnel no problem.  I have looked at all the debugging logs and everything is fine.  The problem is that even though we can see that the tunnel is established, pings do not work from Juniper side.

When I start a ping from the ASA side, the Juniper pings starts working.  We cannot figure out why this is happening.  Any insight would be appreciated.

What version are you running on the ASA /  What ScreenOS are you running?

I had similar issues a couple of years ago, and in the end a maintenance release of ASA code fixed it.  Have you manually set all the timers to be the same both ends already?
