SMB file access SLOW with 4.x client compated to 3.6 client

Cisco Systems, Inc./VPN 3005 Concentrator Version 4.0.4.A

Client was using a mix of 3.5 and 3.6 versions of the VPN client and all was well. They are mapping a drive to a windows server from Windows 2000 and XP clients and file access speed was good.

They upgraded the VPN cleints to ver 4.x of the Cisco VPN client. (4.0.3, 4.0.3c)

Windows file access over a mapped drive became VERY slow and almost unseable. Nothing else changed. If they uninstall the 4.x client and go back to the 3.6 VPN client performance returns.

With the 4.x client installed we tested copying the same file off the same server using a mapped drive and FTP. The mapped drive was very slow ( as mentioned before) FTP access was fast, in fact about the same performance as the SMB file copy using the 3.6 client

Any idea whats going on? What differnet changes does the VPN client do to the operating system between the 2 versions?

I have not experienced this before but it sounds like windows networking issues. The biggest difference in the 2 is that 4.x actually creates a Virtual Adapter that you can make changes to. Maybe look at the setting differences between the 3.6 LAN interface and the 4.x Virtual Adapter.

Hope this helps.
