Use of certificates in SSL-VPNs

hello,

Can someone please explain me that What is the use of creating certificates and keys in SSL VPN Deployments. and why we do select DES/3DES here ,what is the use when we already have SSL protocol for encryption and security.? Or is it like that by creating certificates only, we can use devices as SSL VPN box ?

Digital certificates are used for authentication. The security appliance creates a self-signed SSL server certificate when it boots, or you can install in the security appliance, an SSL certificate that has been issued in a PKI context

For HTTPS, this certificate must then be installed on the client. You only need to install the certificate from a given security appliance once.
