Using the ASDM with Windows 7 - not working

sari.meltzer

I have the ASA 5510, I just upgraded to Windows 7 and installed the ASDM software.  The installation went smoothly but when I launch ASDM all that comes up is the top right of a window, here is a screenshot of what happens.

no errors or anything, I've tried all compatibility modes.  I've googled and searched this site but could not find an answer.  Thanks in advance

ASDM version 6.2.3 onwards supports Windows 7.

Here is the release notes for your reference:

Hope that helps.

Hi Sari,

You are running 7.0.8 (ASDM 5.0.8) which is quite old now, whereas Windows 7 is a new release and the devlopers dint get much chance to do testing as we moved to 8.x. I suspect that the issue you are facing is due to the compatibility of ASDM software with Windows 7 platform.

You can refer the links below:

Release Notes for ASDM 5.0.8 (Windows Vista is in the list but not Windows 7)
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/asa/asa70/asdm50/release/notes/rn508.html#wp139067

*See the ASDM Client PC Operating System and Browser Requirements section*

I would suggest you to upgrade the code to 8.2 and ASDM to 6.2 to make it running on Windows 7

Release Notes for ASDM 6.2.x

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/asdm/6_2/release/notes/asdmrn62.html#wp194641

Release Notes for ASA 8.2.x
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/asa/asa82/release/notes/asarn82.html

Upgrade should be done in the following train

7.0 > 7.2 > 8.0 > 8.2

Hope this answers your post.

Sari,

Can you launch ASDM on this ASA from a different machine?

I want to make sure that you you have the correct ASDM version according to the OS version.

Federico.

I can on XP, I havent tried on Vista since we dont have any computers running it.  I installed the same as I used on XP before the upgrade.  I'm not sure the version though, where can I find the version number?

If you have access to the CLI, you can do a ''sh ver'' and you should get something like this:

Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance Software Version 8.3(1)
Device Manager Version 6.3(1)

Federico.

I'm not sure how to do that.

To access the Command Line of the ASA you have these options:

1. Console access (connect a computer with a console cable to the ASA's console port and access the device via a terminal program like hyperterminal, putty, SecureCRT, Teraterm)

2. Telnet (if having telnet configure) You can telnet to the Inside IP of the ASA from the local LAN or directly connected with an Ethernet cable.

3. SSH (if having SSH configured).

Federico.

ok, i was able to log in on one of the servers.  here is what you asked for

Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance Software Version 7.0(8)
Device Manager Version 5.0(8)

Sari,

I don't see a release note for the ASDM version that you have.

Would you be able to upgrade the ASDM version?

Take a look:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6120/prod_release_notes_list.html

Federico.

I don't mind upgrading, but if the release notes don't specify and OS, how do I know which one is compatible with Win7?  Thanks for your help

To run ASDM version 6.2.x, you would also need to upgrade your ASA to at least version 8.0, as ASDM 6.2.x is only backwards compatible to ASA version 8.0, 8.1 and 8.2.

Not sure if this will help you but we just installed ASDM on a Windows7 machine and the install went very smooth but when you try to run the program a second time it fails with a message about not finding javaw.exe.

We checked the properties on the shortcut and it was pointing to the wrong location for some reason.

Once we copied over the correct location it works perfectly.
