W2k3 Exchange issues via VPN when sending mail to the Internet

We are seeing a strange case of mail being denied when sending to the internet but internal it's okay. We have a windows 2003 server with 2003 exchange at a remote DSL VPN location and when ever a user sends mail to an external users they get an NDR with relaying prohibited, but internally it's fine.

Has anyone seen something lke this?

how have you prohibited relaying? what mail client are you using? outlook in exchange mode uses mapi, which replaces both imap|pop3 and smtp.

We are using outlook 97 for the most part.

What sevrer is giving the NDR? Your server, or the recipient server?

Try telling your Exchange server to send all mail to your ISPs SMTP server, and let your ISP do the forwarding for you.
