getting error "line protcol is down" and port light (gbic 0/1) goes intermittently from orange to green and then eventually shuts down (above message).
...any ideas, ...and how do I turn the port back on without resetting the switch?

Hi
It does indicates that the port is going in errdisable state .
you give shut and no shut command to reenable the port also you can check up the logs using show logs to find out the exact reason for errdisable.
