Within microseconds of a breakage of one part of the path, all data is switched to the active half of the bidirectional path in the stack. The switches continually monitor the stack ports for activity and correct data transmission. If error conditions cross a certain threshold, or there is insufficient electromagnetic contact of the cable with its port, the switch detecting this then sends a message to its nearest neighbor opposite from the breakage. Both switches then divert all their traffic onto the remaining good path.
