6500 Series 8-Port 10 Gigabit Oversubscription

Hi All,

We intended to upgrade 10G network from existing 7606 Switch.

There're 2 modules, WS-X6704-10GE and WS-X6708-10G-3CXL/WS-X6708-10G-3CXL3C.

if we select WS-X6708-10G-3CXL/WS-X6708-10G-3CXL3C... all ports using would consume 80GB logically, but 40GB fabric connection only in spec.

did any recommendation for upgrade 10G network ? I saw in supervisor 2, there're something like SFM to increase the backplane, did sup720 have similar things? or the module originally only 40GB switch fabric ... no way to do even adding SFM.

XENPAK-10GB-ZR could be supported now? i saw from the cisco doc, it mention "Not Available today"..

anyone could confirm me this?

Also, how about if i get 6500 series for 10G? would there're no oversubscription issue?

Many thanks..

You don't need an SFM because it is built into the supervisor 720, that is why the sup720 goes into slots 5 & 6 in the 6509 chassis. The WS-X6708 is as you say oversubscribed by 2:1 and there is nothing you can do to get around this. What you can do is only use 4 of the 8 ports on the module. There is a command that you can use with the WS-X6708 to disable 4 of the ports. From the Q&A -

Q. Is the 8-port 10 Gigabit Ethernet module not oversubscribed if I only use half the ports?
A. Yes, you can use only ports 1, 2, 5, and 6 to provide 40 Gbps local switching. To make it easier for you to configure your network, we have a new software command for you to go into performance mode. The software command
router(config)#[no] hw-module slot x oversubscription

will administratively disable the oversubscribed ports (ports 3, 4, 7, and 8) and put them in "shutdown" state. In this mode, the user cannot do "no shut" on the disabled ports. When user do "show interface" on the disabled ports, the output will show "disabled for performance" to distinguish between normal port shutdown and shutdown for performance.

Thanks but how about this:

All we need is "ZR" no matter it is X2 or XENPAK...

Not sure which link you are referring to, but my links said the ZX optic is available in 10G for both XENPAK and X2

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/modules/ps2797/ps5138/product_data_sheet09186a008007cd00_ps5251_Products_Data_Sheet.html

Please be aware WS-X6704 only takes XENPAK and WS-X6708 only takes X2.

Re: 6500 Series 8-Port 10 Gigabit Oversubscription

Hello Danny,

yes WS-6708 implies a 2:1 oversubscription ratio, no way to upgrade over the 720 Gbps switching fabric both in 7600 or 6500.

note also that if the C7600 has to handle more then 256,000 IPv4 routes (a current full BGP table is more then 300,000) you need a DFC 3CXL or you can have serious issues (the module will not be able to load the full CEF table in DFC)

this oversubscription ratio can be acceptable for some server farms designs.

if implementing 10GE in a campus to access layer you could even think of a 4:1 ratio using WS-6716

Also WS-6708 is suitable for VSS in 6500 devices, WS-6704 cannot be used for this (you have a C7600 but just  as a note)

you could deploy WS-6708 using only four ports of 8, this will require two linecards to connect 8 links, the other links could be used as cold standby in shut down

Hope to help

Giuseppe
