7206VXR CPU Profiling

Hi All,

My customer has a 7206VXR Router which has been experiencing high cpu utilization (90%)

When I do a show process cpu, the individual processes dont add upto anywhere near 90% at all. Can anybody help explain why is it showing such output as it is very difficult to identify a corrupt or hogging process from this.

Also a few tips on troubleshooting high cpu would prove useful to me.

See attachment.

YOu might want to get the output of 'sh proc cpu sorted' which will give a better idea of the CPU hogs...

Dear Prati,

Whatever u r seeing in the firstline is the add up utilization of processes and interuppts. So adding up the processes alone won't yeild the total utilization.

If you want to more troubleshooting on cpu utilization just go thro this link,

High CPU usually occurs when a large number of packets are punted out of the fast switching path (CEF) and into process switching (CPU). When the IP_Input process is unusually high this is a sign of excessive process switching.

As a start, use 'show interface statistics' to see how many packets each interface is process switching versus fast switching.

Also, make sure there is no debugging enabled. 'undebug all'.
