According to these messages, your router was not able to allocate more memory for internal IOS processes including NAT. There are various possible reasons for that:

  1. Your router is low on memory with respect to the amount of services and clients it is serving
  2. Your router has been running for an extended period of time without restart and the memory allocation became so fragmented that the IOS is unable to find an unfragmented section of free RAM for the requesting process
  3. Your NAT configuration results in too many translation entries being created and maintained
  4. You have experienced an IOS bug

Does this problem steadily reappear after restarting the device? If yes, I suggest considering upgrading the IOS and verifying the configuration for obvious memory-hungry processes that could be optimized. Extending the RAM may also be recommendable.

i guess that is draining the memory.

The problem recurs after restarting.

A couple of questions (actually, lots of )

Your CPU load is surprisingly high even in interrupt context (99%/72%). Please try to check the show cef not-cef-switched and show ip cef switching-statistics commands to see if there is any traffic being punted to CPU inappropriately. Also, are you performing any multicast routing or NetFlow version 7 data collection on this device? Are there any tunnels terminated on this 7600?

Can you also post the output of the show ip nat statistics and the first lines of the show memory free commands?

What is the IOS version you are running?

Hello,

if you router has turned  into "processed-switched" mode you can see it if you try those commands:


sh ibc

shows the statistics of CPU processed packets

sh mls cef exception status

  shows the current "exception" status of CEF process

sh mls cef 0.0.0.0  (or other prefix)

  shows the "exception" status of CEF and you should see the MAC address and the interface in  adjacency field in normal status and "receive" in "exception" status

Status "exception" for CEF table means that the forwarding is processed by CPU. Only system reboot can recover the system.

Thanks guys, the issue is sorted.

i had to two

Rsp720-3C-GE.

but the IOS were different. hence they were not load balancing.

i have corrected and the cpu process is at 7%.

but if I correctly undestand, the traffic is not processed by CPU on 720's, CPU processes only a few types of packets and doesn't really depend on amount of whole traffic, which is forwarded by CEF in hardware.

Do you mean that because of IOS difference they have build some kind of loop?

Have you rebooted the router with 100% CPU load? Did you have a chance to check a CEF status?

i realized it's related to natting.

Lorna,

Your CPU is primarily driven by interrupts (traffic ) see the second value after /:

99%/78%

So some traffic being processed switched causing you the problems. You need to identify that. There is non-impacting method to sniff CPU:

debug netdr capture rx

term len 0

show netdr capture

u all

This will show you what are the packets sent to CPU instead of being HW switched. You can examine those or attached here for anyone to advise how to mitigate those.

shows the statistics of CPU processed packets

sh mls cef exception status

  shows the current "exception" status of CEF process

sh mls cef 0.0.0.0  (or other prefix)

   shows the "exception" status of CEF and you should see the MAC address  and the interface in  adjacency field in normal status and "receive" in "exception" status

it'd show the status of you CEF table

"sh ibc" shows that you you have ~250Mbit egress and ~50 Mbit ingress traffic processed by CPU.

Now is the question - why.

CEF looks normall.

Have you checked  the featured set, which is supported by your HW? may be you some strange policy-map or QoS statements which are not supported by HW and should sent to the CPU.

Just have a look carefully ally your active "funny features"

Found that. Packets in CPU are various so I would start with most repetative once. E.G. this one I see often:

This seems to be HTTP return traffic as TCP src port is 80. Destination is 41.76.168.1 (please check if you have correct routing to it and cef). However dest_index for it is 0x380 which is CPU. I guess that is because this packet has dont fragment bit set (df 1) and the length 0x5EE(1518) possibly higher than MTU (if MTU default- 1500). So for this packet I would check the MTU on the interfaces (and increase that accordingly) and possibly try to remove DF bit from this traffic if possible within your network.

I'm not familiar with CCEE protocol but we see a number of those packets on your switch. The common thing is that destmac 00.26.CB.51.0E.40 is always same. Isn't it a switch MAC? I  mean if all these packets sent to the switch? The internal destination index dest_indx 0x7E02 seems to be meaning that this packet was blocked with ACL and I guess that ACL might have the log keyword to send copy of packet to CPU so that is also a subject for you to check. Or you can just take the src MAC of all such packets and trace it to see who is sending those packets and possibly srop.

This is smth I would start with and later will check CPU again once these packets eliminated from it.

two more notations on top of what Nikolay pointed out.

we have about 50Mb of traffic going TO the RP and about 250Mb coming back from it. This asymmetry is something to check as well as there might be different and overlapping causes for such High cpu condition (at a later stage a debug netdr in the tx direction might be useful)

Also, according to netdr capture the 2 interfaces punting to the RP the most are G1/2 and G5/2 which are the ones involved in NAT. We need to investigate around that and see if other features are fighting with it. It's worth remembering that NAT is a software assisted feature on this box, meaning that to create the flow in hw the first packet of each flow must be sent to the CPU. The more new NAT tranlsations are created the higher CPU utilization (both in itnerrupts and in processes) will be seen.

What is important now is to check the config of the 2 interfaces and some other outputs related to them.

also there might be something wrong with the nat acl and pool (access-list NAT-ACL pool INTERNET_POOL)

ok, we got the cause (or at least one) of the high cpu.

Int g1/2 is programmed in hw to punt basically all the traffic.

particularly we see

    punt         ip any 41.x.x.x 0.0.0.255 (144419984 matches)   <<<< look at the hits

I need to do a check with NAT config but you did not send all the info (and some of it was removed for privacy reason)

feel free to send me a pvt message if you dont want to disclose all the info in public about INTERNET_POOL (I need to see it all) and also I need to see the NAT-ACL  (all of it).

7606 Router cpu utilization is hitting 99%!

- i just connected new router to this one with iBGP , then this problem happen , but almost times when i make shutdown / unshudown for the interface that connected to this router the cpu decrease by 20% then after 2-3 days the problem start againe .
