800 Series - Site to site VPN

I am designing a solution for a customer that needs to connect two small office locations.

Ideally, I would suggest they purchased a Frame Relay connection between each office, but their monthly budget may not allow this.

So, I am going to propose a site to site VPN solution. Both locations have 6Mbps DSL down and about 512Kbps up. The site to site connection would be up at all times.

The type of traffic that would go across the pipe is transactional information. Nothing too bandwidth intensive.

I plan on utilizing two 800 series routers behind an existing DSL modem that will set up as a pass through so that the public IP information will be assigned to the router.

What are some issues to be aware of with this setup. Can routing protocols (OSPF or EIGRP) be run across the IPsec VPN tunnel? Is the configuration straitforward?

Thank you in advance for any advice.

Re: 800 Series - Site to site VPN

Depending on how many VPNs you want to support, the newer 880 and 890 will support OSPF and EIGRP (IP and IP Services).

The older 870 also BGP, OSPF and EIGRP.

Comparison Chart and Data Sheets for the 870, 880 & 890 below:

Cisco 880 Series Integrated Services Routers

Cisco 890 Series Integrated Services Routers

Hope this helps.

Would I have to do GRE tunnelling to use routing protocols over the IPsec VPN?
