837 and DNS locally provided by DHCP

Hello,

I have a 837 running and local PCs are connected getting their IP by local DHCP server on the 837. A DNS server address is provided to my by the ISP. Don´t know how I can make DHCP providing the ISPs DNS to the PCs ? Or do I have to run something like DNS forwarding ?

Please try the following:

Router(config-dhcp)# dns-server address [address2 ... address8]

The command specifies the IP address of a DNS server that is available to a DHCP client. One IP address is required; however, you can specify up to eight IP addresses in one command line.

Hello,

thank you very much, but I would like to assign a DNS that is dynamically provided to me by the ISP rather than a static DNS.

When doing a "sh dhcp server" you have a DNS0 and a DNS1, are those the 2 DNS servers you want to use in your local DHCP pool?

If that is the case just write "import all" in your DHCP pool config, like so:

ip dhcp pool A

import all

Please note that the DNS Domain name will allso be imported.

Re: 837 and DNS locally provided by DHCP

When I do a "sh dhcp server" I just get the following message:

DHCP server: ANY (255.255.255.255)

Leases: 0

Offers: 0 Requests: 0 Acks: 0 Naks: 0

Declines: 0 Releases: 0 Bad: 0

But the 837 is provided with the ISPs DNS and I can also use it from there ...

The ISP side provides the IPs by RADIUS server entries "Framed-IP-Address", the DNS by IPCP (on a Cisco 2610 with "ppp ipcp dns XX.XX.XX.XX"

Or do I have to use a real DHCP server on the 837 rather than just a DHCP pool in order to get the DNS for the clients ?

OK, so your 837 is not configured with "ip address dhcp" rather it's "ip address negotiated".

Well I guess it should work anyway, did you try out the "import all"?

Do you think you could post the 837 config in the forum?
