857W router bricked, maybe dead flash

Hi all.

I have a clients 857W which is out of smartnet... and im trying to resurect it.

It looks like flash is dead. When it enters the boot strapper you get the following

C850 series (Board ID: 2-149) platform with 65536 Kbytes of main memory

flashfs[0]: unable to allocate available block.
flash: file system initialization failed
Could not open boot directory: flash:/
Unable to open boot file

If you try to use rom mon to upload some IOS you cant.. you get this...

rommon 2 > IP_ADDRESS=192.168.0.2
rommon 3 > IP_SUBNET_MASK=255.255.255.0
rommon 4 > DEFAULT_GATEWAY=192.168.0.3
rommon 5 > TFTP_SERVER=192.168.0.1
rommon 6 > TFTP_FILE=c850.bin
rommon 7 > tftpdnld

          IP_ADDRESS: 192.168.0.2
      IP_SUBNET_MASK: 255.255.255.0
     DEFAULT_GATEWAY: 192.168.0.3
         TFTP_SERVER: 192.168.0.1
           TFTP_FILE: c850.bin
Do you wish to continue? y/n:  [n]:  y
flashfs[0]: unable to allocate available block.
flash: file system initialization failed

Safe to say the onboard flash is busted? If so can i instal some flash to be used instead of the busted on board stuff?

ANy help would be greatly appreciated

Pete

Re: 857W router bricked, maybe dead flash

Hi Pete,

It is indeed possible that the router's FLASH is dead but I don't give up the hope yet. Using the same procedure as outlined in your original post, try using the tftpdnld -r command to load the IOS directly to the RAM and run it from there. Then, try using the format flash: (or the older erase flash:) command under the IOS - perhaps that one will at least produce more comprehensive error messages.

Best regards,

Peter
