870 series fixed-configurztion

I saw into the Q&A of Cisco 870 that they are fixed-configuration routers? What does it mean?

a fixed configuration device is a device that contains specific hardware and cannot be upgraded/replaced.

for example:

a 870 "fixedConfiguration" router contains:

4 x 10/100BT MDI/MDIX ethernet ports

1 x WLAN port

(no ability to upgrade/replace hardware components)

a 2800 "modularConfiguration" router contains module slots that can contain many different hardware options.

so in a nut, fixedConfiguration cannot be hardware upgraded. (memory & flash can in most cases but not other hardware such as ethernet ports or WAN ports)

modularConfiguration can be hardware upgraded. (ie: replace a single T1 WIC with a dual T1 WIC)
