how can i use something i can recognize, and still encrypt it? if i do a "ppp chap password 0 pw", then my password "pw" is open to viewing, but if i do "ppp chat password 5 pw", "pw" wouldn't be acceptable, so how can i use something i can remember and still mask the actual password?
If you simply use ppp chap password and turn on the service password-encryption then the password will be crypted (not hashed) with a light algorithm (there are free tools on the Internet for that) and you can restore it but not stored as clear text in the config.
The only 2 accepted values for password encryption (in the display) is 0 (not yet encrypted - default) and 7 (and here you must enter the password in the encrypted form), but note that once you enabled service password-enryption, the password will be encrypted when displayed, even if you've entered it as unencrypted "0".
This is actually a pretty cool feature, i didn't even know it existed until I was looking for a solution to advertise a subnet (prefix in BGP talk), only if a certain condition existed. This is exactly what conditional advertisements does
