Access Console via USB?

I recently received a laptop for onsite troubleshooting, which I'd mainly use to console into devices. Unfortunatly it has no Serial port but instead 8 USB ports. I purchased an adapter for USB to RS232/DB9 ( ) to connect my terminal adapter to, which then I'd connect my console cable and then to the device.

I open Hyperterminal and it see's the USB port as COM5, I select the standard settings as normal with COM5 as the port to use, when the white screen comes up, it's unresponsive. I've attempted to use some other terminal programs with no luck as well.

Any help in getting this adapter working, other software or other adapters to use would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Access Console via USB?

* Have you confirmed that you can access the router from another PC which has a com port ? This will eliminate any issues with the router's console port.

* Also try the usb2serial adapter from a different PC. This will eliminate any issues with your USB port/ driver problem on your PC.

* Make sure COM 5 is indeed the port. If you unplug the adapter, COM5 should disappear.

* Make sure your hyperterm settings are appropriate. (I am sure you already checked all this)

* I use an adapter (30$) from IOGEAR bought from Frys, works like a charm..Have been using it for last 2 yrs.

* Since this is a custom made cable (the one bought from ebay) , not sure if it has been cabled properly.

Re: Access Console via USB?

I know I can connect via the hard mounted serial port on my one pc, I'll try testing the usb via that one as well. I verified it was com5 via the device manager, but I will again test your suggestion. Hyperterm settings were good, and the adapter I have should e IOGEAR, at least from what the auction says.
