Hi every body!
my book defines active vlan as vlan which is defined on switch and and has ports assigned to it.
However ,same book shows the out put of " show vlan"
vlan name status ports
2 vlan 0002 active fa0/4
5 vlan 0005 active
The vlan 5 is shown as active though no port is assigned to it which contradicts the book definition of active vlan.
Any thoughts?
Thanks a lot!

The other thing that will put a VLAN into the active state is if there is a trunk port on the switch which carries traffic for that VLAN. Does this switch have a trunk port which has VLAN 5 as one of its VLANs?

Thanks Rick for your reply!
well book just shows the output of " show vlan" for illustrative purpose , i believe.
Your point makes sense because if switch has trunk carrying vlan 5, then it is regarded as active as well.
Thanks a lot!

Hi Sarah,
will it stay active if you enable VTP pruning
(http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst4500/12.2/25ew/configuration/guide/vtp.html#wp1020444 ) for VLAN5?
