Add a customer to an existing MPLS VPN network?

HI everyone,

Hope you can help! We are bidding a project...which require to add a cusomter/location to an existing MPLS VPN network, which have two current customers already. May I ask what infomation I need to collect, and what steps (in brief detail) to perform to complete this project? Also, the configuration would not affect the existing customers?

I know MPLS can apply on layer 2 and layer 3? Would the steps be different? Or let's just assume that is on layer 2, which is little more common now?Thank you very much for your help.

Bob,

is really simple to add a customer/branch to an existing MPLS network.

1.Create  vrf for the customer on the PE device which will connect the Customer's CE router, note different VRFs for multiple branches for the same customer

2.Define a route distinguishers, unique RDs for each branch for the customer in order to treat each branch  traffic unique.

3.Import each branch rd on their respective PEs and import the other branches rd for the same customer and ofcourse export the rds.

4 Inlude the new customer in the existing MP-BGP network within the PEs

5.Run BGP between customer's CE router and their respective PE router.

NOTE: This will not affect the existing cutomers.

Hi Sam, thank you very much for your information. I really appreciate it!

One irrelevant question.... do you think MPLS is included CCIE routing exam?

Hello,

Basic MPLS is included in the current CCIE R&S Exam, see the following Written and Lab Exam blueprints:

https://learningnetwork.cisco.com/docs/DOC-4374

https://learningnetwork.cisco.com/docs/DOC-4375

Best regards,

Peter

Bob,

Yes MPLS is included in the CCIE R/S, is not  basic but is not very advanced as you'll find on the CCIE SP exam.

The lab is devided into two Parts, the configuration and the Troubleshooting. The MPLS on the configuration section  is OK since they limit you to about 2 or 3 customers per PE. But the troubleshooting section is very complicated and needs lots of practice, since they give  29 or more routers and lots of PEs amongst them.

On the CCIE R/S conig section, you should be able to configure P, PE with MP-BGP and CE-PE relationship with either BGP  or IGP, even though in the real world ,the CE-PE relationship is established normaly with BGP or in a limited situations with static routes. You must understand the MPLS concept deeply to pass the Troubleshooting section.

But you do not have to worry about MPLS traffic engineering as in CCIE SP.

We'll always be here to help you when the time comes.
