ADSL troubleshooting

Hi,

I have an adsl connection using the cisco 1841 router and I would like  to check why my connection has some problems and cannot utilize the line  correctly. I have below the commands, sh dsl interface & sh  processes cpu, which show that the "Noise Margin" is not quite high. So,  is there any link from cisco that troubleshoots the adsl connections  from the physical layer til the last one? If not for the current model,  please let me know for another one.

Hi,

Yes, it will work regardless of the platform, the firmware will adjust/modify the card's operation only. These are the steps for the firmware upgrade, it is the same procedure as when doing an IOS upgrade:

1. Download the file and rename the file "adsl_alc_20190.bin".

2. We need to have a TFTP server software installed on a PC.

3. PC connected to the Cisco router through a network cable.

4. Make sure we have connectivity to and from the Cisco router (we are able

to ping).

5. The file (Firmware file) must be saved in the TFTP server software root

directory.

6. After upgrading the firmware we need to reload the router in order for

the new firmware to take effect.

Hi,

Please see the output of your third command.

reliability 255/255, txload 169/255, rxload 171/255


TX and RX is high, which can result in slow responses.

Also, if you can post output of command

sh caller

by the way, there are two lines on the router.

Hi,

As seen in output of command sh caller, your that link is stable for over 2 weeks.

Hence, it is definately issue with the over utilization of the link.

Also, as you mentioned that you have got another link too. There are many concerns on  the same.

1. Is that link been used ?

2. How load balancing is configured.

3. How routing with ISP is configured

It would be much better if you can share sanitised config.

All of above can lead to performance issue which can be due to not proper load balancing OR asymmetric routing, etc.

Hi,

I assume you have an HWIC-1ADSL, you can try to upgrade your ADSL card firmware to 4.0.15 (you can do this by dowloading secific firmware or by upgrading IOS to latest ones), currently you are using embedded one 3.0.14, this will improve EC and solve some interop problems. Just as an aside question, are you experiencing some sort of problems? I can see card is reporting Reed Solomon EC which is good and a few CRC errors .

your noise margin is below average. contact your SP to rectify this.

you also have high CRC errors. try changing RJ11, do a clear counters and monitor.

No, the firmware I am referring to is the one listed under the show dsl interface atm x command:

I would recommend upgrading it to 4.0.15, here is where you can download it:

I know this to be a problem with the older WIC-1ADSL modules and the higher level IOSs; however I have not worked with the HWIC cards. Do a show dsl int atmx/x/x; this should show an output similar to this:

Look at the interleave numbers; are they showing interleave or fast? If they are showing interleave rather than fast you will need to issue the following command on the atm interface which should look something like this:

Again this is a problem with advipservices and adventerprise versions of the IOS with a WIC-1ADSL, if you do not issue the clock rate command the interface will operate at roughly half the speed of the line. After you issue the command it should operate at full speed.

Again I know this to be true with the WIC, not sure about the HWIC. I've got a very old post on here about this topic somewhere.
