hi,

There are TWO main types of dual homing:

1)Two connections from the same service provider.

2)Two connections from different service provider.

Using powerfull BGP attributes you can load balance the traffic between these two connections.

for your refference:

A site having 2 links for connecting to internet either via same ISP or different ISP is said to be Multihomed site. This is done in order to achieve load-balancing & redundancy between the links.

This requires the owner of the site to have a Public AS number & a owned Public IP pool.

The site would than run BGP with the 2 ISP's to achieve the purpose. BGP uses some of its attributes to provide load-balancing & redundancy.

Link provided by Shri is a nice one. you may go thru it for further reading.

Hi

Peering with the same ISP with two separate peering-points is Dual Homing.

Peering with two or more different ISPs is Multi-Homing.

Cheers
