ASR compared to ISR

I have been assigned a client that has a lot of ASR routers.  I was wondering how different are the configuration commands on the ASR compared to the ISR?

Re: ASR compared to ISR

For things like configuring interfaces, routing protocols, etc they are quite similar. It is in the system management functions that you would find more differences.

Re: ASR compared to ISR

Hi Richard,

Thanks for the reply.  Could you perhaps give some examples of what is different with the system management functions.  The reason for all this is I am trying to decide if it is worth taking some courses for this.

Re: ASR compared to ISR

Hi Marius

In terms of Architecture, the ASR is totally different from  ISR's. In ASR, the IOS itself is a thread of the linux. Its tiring and difficult to explain the concepts and the differences you requested for in this space as its vast.

You may google with keywords "CISCO ASR PPT" and download the first PPT. This doc should give you good understanding of this platform.

Bootup process is same as other routers running IOS

Rommon image boots up first and then boots up IOS XE image.

Boot statement configuration is also same as other routers running IOS

IOS XE software upgrade is also same as other routers running IOS (with consolidated mode)

RP downloads software to ESP and SPA modules. Procedure different if running sub-package mode
