Is ATM the most common WAN technology, or are other technologies more commonly used? Also, what Cisco certification would help me most regarding this topic?

ATM is kind of becoming a legacy.

Ethernet seems to be the prime choice these days, with many transmission platforms.

With regards to certifications and ATM. if u need to gain inside knowledge on ATM there some good Cisco press by Galina Pildur.

depends how deep u wanna get.

CCNA will give the basics, but good enough !

CCIE R&S will be the top one to go for.

to teh best of my knowledge, none of the above specialize in WAN only. u might want to read up on Cisco website and make up ur own database.
