BGP Event process

Just a quick question, does any one know what the BGP Even process does?

The quick answer is that I am not sure. Haven't seen it documented in CCO. Maybe it has to to with IP Event Dampening:

People usually start wondering about what a process does when they see some issue such as high CPU utilization. Is that so in your case?

I know the response "I am not sure" isn't very helpful and I do not usually provide it as an answer. You can find a list of processes here:

I do not see the BGP Event process listed anywhere. It is not uncommon to see undocumented things concerning the IOS internals. If anyone knows better or has related documentation that I couldn't find, I am sure they will post it.

Just a note: in the thread I posted in my first post, the thread author sees the BGP Event process running and everytime this happens, messages related to event dampening are logged ('debug ip bgp event' is also enabled). However, the author claims that they haven't configured EvD, so maybe this was just a bug. My guess is that this could be a process that monitors interface events related to BGP and notifies other BGP processes about them. A reason for having a separate process could be to be able to tune separately how often a process runs. Does any of those speculations make sense in your environment?

Thank you for all of these links. I read that newsgroup message, but I dont have dampening configured on my routers. Kind of weird that there is this mystery process out there for BGP.

Yes, I know. When I started working I wanted to know all about IOS output and beyond. This hasn't changed much, but I kind of learned to expect that not all things will be documented. It isn't such a big deal to give a general description about what a process does though. Let's hope that someone from cisco responds
