BGP on a 3640 %SYS-2-MALLOCFAIL:

Hi I have a big problem with one of the my edge internet routers (they are in high availability) both are Cisco 3640 R1&R2 today I have a problem with one of them R1, the bgp session was down an all traffic was redirected to the other one R2.

When the session came Up in R1 the router R2 started to drop the bgp sessions and I received a couple of messages like this

*Feb 28 18:04:15: %SYS-2-MALLOCFAIL: Memory allocation of 65536 bytes failed from 0x603F835C, align

ment 0 Pool: Processor Free: 17236 Cause: Not enough free memory Alternate Pool: None Free: 0 Cause: No Alternate pool

-Process= "BGP Router", ipl= 0, pid= 83

I reset the router several times without success according Cisco Site web is a memory problem but I do not understand what started the problem.

Re: BGP on a 3640 %SYS-2-MALLOCFAIL:

hi,

this could just be a faulty memory chip, or simply normal growth of the BGP table. Assuming both 3640 are the same with respect to hardware I would assume a memory chip problem. What does "sh proc mem" and "show version" on both routers give you?

You might need a memory replacement.

Hope this helps! Please rate all posts.
