BGP

guys i have just stepped into BGP....now i have read all the things but just conmfused about few things may be someone can please help me out.......now by default BGP uses AS-Path (plz correct me if i wrong) to choose best routes??? and to prevent loops?? am i right or wrong now the second thing is there are few macahinasim or attributes how to contol traffic coming into our AS and going out from our AS.....for going out we use weight? if the link is on same router or local preference if we have two routers....and for controllling traffic coming in we use MED??? we only suggest to neibour router??? guys am i right or wrong that is what my understanding.....can someone please correct me or add something.....to my knowlege....Thanks alot in advance
