Can a 3640 handle a DS-3?

Any reason a 3640 with an NM-A1-T3 couldn't handle a ds-3 circuit? We have a 10mb pvc on it which I believe can burst upto the full ds-3 speed. We seem to be losing UDP packets at the application level at a rate of about 5-10 per minute under steady load.

Here is the output from show interface:

The drops (40) from the input queue don't seem to coorespond to the udp packets that application is not receiving. I think the drops are in the network or on this router as I have the same data and application working on another circuit (ima atm with 3 T1s) working with only a few dropped packets a day and I can trace this to data bursts that exceed the 4.5mb bandwidth.

I'm trying to figure out if the loss in in the atm cloud or at my router. Any thoughts on how to proceed would be appriciated. -- Bud

3640's are old, slow routers. While it can accommodate a DS3 card, dont expect it to be able to even get close to filling it up. While I dont have hard numbers on how much it can push, i'd estimate you'll max out at about 8-10Mbps.

In order to push a full DS3, you'll need a 3825 if you aren't running any features (qos), and a 3845 if you are.

Make sure you have 'ip cef' enabled globally, and there isn't any 'no ip route-cache' on any of your interfaces in order to get the most performance out of your router.

Thanks wochanda for some feedback. I have confirmed that others are using the same hardware for this application and aren't seeing dropped packets so I am now more confident that it is a configuration issue or bad piece of hardware. We basically have a fast ethernet interface and a DS3/ATM module:

The errors that show up here don't seem to correspond to the drops I am seeing. In other words, these counts don't change when I am seeing dropped packets.

Two more notes. 98% of the traffic is multicast data coming into the DS3 interface. "show proc cpu hist" shows peek of 20% while packets are being dropped.
