can you run mpls on ethernet?

if you had a WAN 802.1q vlan between remote sites (multiple) could you configure MPLS on it?

Absolutely. We have multiple such links between our PE routers running quite successfully.

All MPLS does is tag a packet. This can be done on an ethernet interface as well. Make sure your router feature set supports MPLS.
