cannot access usbflash0: in Rommon

Hi guys,

This question is about a Cisco 871, which has no bootable image in flash.

The device is currently in rommon, and i am attempting to copy the correct .bin file over from usbflash0: but recieve the following error:

unable to stat usbflash0:/: permission denied

i get the same error if i try to boot from usb, or even try to view the directory.

Config register is currently set to 0x2102

Typically in this scenario, i just boot from usb, and copy everything over in enable mode, but the lack of permission on this particular router has me stumped.

Ideas anyone?

Hi Clyde,

You can try typing dev in rommon mode to see if the router recognizes your usb device.

unfortunately dev is not a valid command in this version of rommon.

on a side note, rommon version is 12.3, and some digging around, shows that maybe USB wasn't supported until 12.4

Is that the problem?

I believe you are correct and that the 871 ROMMON doesn't support USB booting or access. I've attempted the same thing previously and I came to the same conclusion.

I don't think that USB drivers were included in ROMMON until later versions than are available for the 871, the latest for which is 12.3(8r)YI6.

870 is the only router in the ISR G1 family that you can't boot from USB even when running the YI6 bootstrap.

The fastest way to load the IOS into the router via ROMmon is using TFTPDNLD.
