catalyst 2950 series - SPAN Destination (Monitoring) Interface

I just want to know if once you set an interface as SPAN Destination (Monitoring) Interface, you can not access (eg ping) any device attaches to that interface.

Is this the case or something wrong with my switch?

I need to ssh the computer attached to this interface, which is running a monitoring volume (usage) application.

Here's a quote from the 2950 config guide:

"Destination ports do not receive or forward traffic, except that required for the SPAN session."

So the answer to your question is: no - you cannot pass any non-span traffic over that port. There is nothing wrong with your switch.

I have a catalyst 2900 series which I can ssh a machine on the destination port.

is this because it is a different series?

Hi,

I can't find anu document on SPAN on the Cat2900 series switches but the doco on the Cat2950 is pretty clear on this:

"When you configure a switch port as a SPAN destination port, it is no longer a normal switch port; only monitored traffic passes through the SPAN destination port."

So I would say that what you are observing is intended behaviour.
