Catalyst 6500

Does catalyst 6500 do all the functions which network infrastructure requires??

Then there is no need of router & firewall??

What is recommended?

Re: Catalyst 6500

Yes, Cat6500 is capable of doing all the things for you. It can have different service modules like firewall,IDS, Appplication acceleration, server load-balancing.

It all depends on the kind of services you want to run on the switch and the type of modules you are using. If you want to use 6500 for both l3 switching/routing and firewall module then you dont need a router or firewall.

Re: Catalyst 6500

Hello,

The question: "what is recommended" is not easily answered.

It depends on what the customer expects from the network, the size and expected growth of the current network, needed extra services, budget, etc.

A seperate asa firewall and an 4500 series switch instead of a 6500 switch with fwsm could also be a choice.

You should first make a network design with the functionality without looking directly for a specific device.
