cdp neighbors over serial

Hi,

Just curious, shouldn't cdp work also for neighbor devices connected via serial links like frame relay?  If it shouldn't work, is it because cdp is primarily a layer 2 function and would not work on serial links which basically uses its own layer 2 protocols.

Thanks in advance.

CDP certainly works over most serial interface types. Here is a quote from a Cisco document

CDP is enabled by default on all supported  interfaces (except for Frame Relay multipoint subinterfaces) to send and  receive CDP information. However, some interfaces, such as ATM  interfaces, do not support CDP.

So perhaps you are encountering the Frame Relay multipoint subinterface restriction?
