Cisco 1760 WIC

Hi all!

I just purchased a Cisco 1760 router (still waiting for it to arrive), and a question came into my mind:

Since this is a modular router, I will need an expansion card for WAN connectivity. There are a few cards around, which include SHDSL, T1, T3, etc. but the problem is, for now the connection we have is a cable modem.

I used to plug my cable modem into my little 4-port TP-Link router's wan port, but now that we are getting a real rackmount router (1760), can I use a T1 card to connect my cisco 1760 router to my cable modem?

Thanks!

P.S. This is my first post, and as you can see, my CCNA is very rusty for now

I can not identify part numbers on either of the links that you posted to allow me to be sure what might work. I did find a specification in a Cisco Data Sheet on the 1760 that it supports

WIC-1ENET

see this URL for further detail

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/routers/ps221/products_data_sheet09186a00800920f2.html

Since the first link you posted identifies the card as FastEthernet then I am pretty sure that this would not work for you. The second link identifies the card as 1E card. I am guessing that it might work - but I can not be certain.

I am not sure that you will need a cross over cable. The connection of router to switch should work fine with straight through cable. And my memory is that router to cable modem works with straight through cable.

Re: Cisco 1760 WIC

Thanks for the fast reply, I know that the cable modem will plug into an Ethernet port. The cable modem has a ethernet port on itself. The question is, which card do you suggest I put into my 1760 to allow connectivity, since this router does not come natively with a WAN port ?

It seems that you are very focused on needing a "WAN" port on your 1760. But in the context of a cable modem an Ethernet/FastEthernet interface/card functions as the "WAN" interface/card.

If your 1760 has an available Ethernet interface just use that for your cable modem. If there is not an available Ethernet interface then look for an Ethernet card that is supported on the 1760.

All right, my router has only a LAN (10/100), an AUX and a console port, so I guess I need an Ethernet card, like Mr. Burts said. I found these items (used of course):

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/CISCO-FAST-ETHERNET-CARD-800-02691-02-73-1688-05-/120686517325?pt=COMP_EN_Networking_Components&hash=item1c197a1c4d

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Cisco-Ethernet-1E-interface-card-/320836810538?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4ab35d372a

These seem to be cards for a modular router, however I googled for their part number and found nothing releavant about compatibility with the 1760.

All right, thanks for the advice. I bought the card:

http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150751711435

Which is "Genuine Cisco WIC-1ENET 1-port Ethernet interface 10BaseT". I'll try that and hope it's gonna work.

Thanks !

That sounds like the right card. I am optimistic that it will work in your 1760. Please let us know how it works out.

It should arrive on Tuesday. I have a 1760 router and a WS-C2924 switch. Do these device support auto-MDIX or are they too old for that? I have difficulty finding crossover cables even with my providers so I guess they support that.
