Cisco 877 DSL configuration

Hi,

We have just purchased a 887 router to make a site-to-site VPn between out offices. In one of them we have an ASA 5520 and we are trying to have the new 877 router working with DSL conection before trying VPN.

The point is that I am not able to connect it to DSL, I have follow several manuals an there wasn't any way to do it.

As I followed instructions I found I couldn't bring some configurations to the router, such as "dsl operating-mode auto"

Does anybody know what I am leaving on the way?

A show vesion command shows this: Cisco IOS Version 15.1(4)M3

Hardware:

1 DSL controller

1 Ethernet interface

4 FastEthernet interfaces

1 ATM interface

1 irtual Private Network (VPN) Module

256K bytes of non-volatile configuration memory

124160K bytes of ATA compactFlash (Read/write)

Device is CISCO887VA-K9

Thank you very much.

Kind regards

Does another modem/router work on the circuit ?

Thank you for the answer

No, I purchased it with the idea to connect it directly to the internet at that side. In the ASA side there is a Cisco 1841 router.

thank you

kind regards.

You need to know the connection parameters for your ISP.

I know them all, I think.

These are the data:

dynamic IP, encapsulation LLC vpi 8 vci 32

and after that I know username, password and DNS servers.

Thank you

Is that PPPoE ?

hi david,

could you post your show version output? your 877's K9 IOS should be able support the "dsl operating-mode auto" command and for your VPN.

did you try to put the said command under the ATM interface? and as paolo pointed out, is this PPPoE or PPPoA connection?

877(config)#int atm0

877(config-if)#dsl ?

enable-training-log  enable the Alcatel fw training log

lom                  Loss Of Margin watch counter for line retrain

operating-mode       auto or full rate or G.lite mode

877(config-if)#dsl operating-mode ?

  ansi-dmt  ANSI full rate mode

  auto      auto detect mode

  itu-dmt   ITU full rate mode

hi,

according to what ISP said and the old router was configured is PPPoE.

Attached you will find sh version result and the atm0 interface commands results.

Thank you very much.

Kind regards.

Is not said that you have to configure operating-mode, but if you have to, for an 887VA, that is done under controller vadsl, not interface.

hi david,

apologies i thought this setup is for an 877.

as for the 887, AFAIK i don't think the "dsl operating-mode auto" command is necessary. just put in the VPI/VCI and encapsulation type.
