Hi,

One question about "traffic shaping"

ATM and FR can support FRTS, can MetroNet and MPLS support class based traffic shaping?

Hello Anita,

metro ethernet can support it or not it depends on hardware and software used.

For L2 services it is important to mark the 802.1Q CoS field with the value desired to get a differentiated treatment this can be handled by all devices in the path to destination.

Hope to help

Giuseppe

Hello Anita,

the answer is yes in most cases with execptions caused by specific linecards on switches.

Modular QoS helps MPLS to emulate an ATM environment and is an integral part of MPLS solutions: the MPLS header has a 3 bits field called EXP that can be used as a form of CoS.

To be able to map a full DSCP field that is 6 bits wide there are different solutions including using multiple MPLS paths (LSP) to the same destination to carry flows with different DSCP markings.

Usually the PE access links to CE routers implement form of shaping and/or policing as specified in SLA. But at the edge traffic is not MPLS tagged so this is again IP based marking.

match mpls exp

can be used in a class map to define traffic with a specific EXP value in MPLS header.

there are also specialized ACLs to match MPLS EXP in some platforms.
