Hi,
The config-register is stored in the non-volatile RAM (NVRAM), the same place where the startup-configuration is stored.

The config register is a 16-bit register in NVRAM, different to the startup-config which is a file of commands. Deleting the startup-config does not affect the config-register.

Hi Biplob,
Config-register is stored in NVRAM it is not stored in startup config so even if you delete the startup config router will boot wth the default initial config.
When the router boots up it reads the config register value from nvram and decide it further task depening upon the config -register vaue.
Now depending upon the config reg value router will decide whether it needs to boot up with the startup config or just will boot bypassing the startup config.

Now config register can play different role and above is just one example I posted.
HTH, if yes please rate the post.

Hi,
The register is always present, even the first time you boot up the router. The register will have factory-default settings, of course.
Pls do rate posts that help.

Hello,
in addition to Paresh´s post(s), keep in mind that the factory-default setting for the configuration register is 0x2102. This means that the router attempts to load an IOS software image from Flash memory and load the startup configuration with a console speed of 9600 baud. If there is no startup configuratio present, you will be presented with the initial configuration dialog...

The router has a 16-bit configuration register in NVRAM. Each bit has value 1 (on or set) or value 0 (off or clear), and each bit setting affects the router behavior upon the next reload power cycle.
