crossover between 3550's failing

I noticed my port lights are not illuminated on two 3550's connected together at port 12 via a xover cable (tried a new cable same problem), ...any ideas?

I have the following setup for xover port 12;

No Switchport

No IP address

shutdown

duplex full

[attrgautam]

The interface is shut. did u try unshut the interface ....... ?

How do you restart an interface (3550 ios 12.1 (22))?

it would be ideally no shutdown command which will enable the interface.

hope u are aware the procedure on how to get onto the interface level mode where you keyin this command..
