DMVPN Hub Phase 2 with spoke using shortcut

We are running DMVPN in our pre-production lab. We just discovered our Cisco ASR 1002 series routers (NHS) do not support ip nhrp redirect (phase 3). The command line accepts the command but fails to function.

We have moved back to phase 2 on the hub(s) (removed ip nhrp redirect and added no ip next-hop-self eigrp AS#)

On the spokes we removed ip nhrp shortcut as well and reloaded all.

The question is this:

Can we leave the hub(s) running in phase 2 mode while we allow the spokes to run in phase 3 mode? Does this hurt us? Are there hidden issues we need to examine or be aware of?

Our plan is to upgrade the hub(s) when Cisco releases the new IOS code sometime late '09 but did not want to have to revisit every spoke in our environment as there are MANY (<500) spokes?

Any thoughts greatly appreciated!!!!

Tks

Frank

Hi Franck,

It's not recommended but it should work. If the HUB never sends the NHRP redirect, there will not have any shortcut initiation on the remote spoke so traffic will continue to be forwarded via the HUB.

It should be tested in any case.
