I was told that using BVI's on my router will cause a huge performance hit because the packets flowing through those interfaces are not CEF switched.
could someone validate this claim or provide a link to support it?

I don't know the answer to this off the top of my head, but the easiest way to find out would be to do a 'show int switching' This is a hidden command on some IOS platforms, so you may not be able to autocomplete this command or see it in the help facility. It should show you a breakdown of the switching algorithms utilized by interface.
