Dual WAN with Cisco 881

Hi,

We are using several Cisco 881 routers on remote location and are looking for a way to implement WAN redundancy.

The routers are using PPPoE.

Is is possible to implement some sort of redundancy with a second WAN connection that will be connected on one of the Switch interfaces?

I was thinking about creating a VLAN interface that will be used for routing and then to connect the second WAN connection on one of the switching ports that will be placed in that same VLAN. Then I would use SLA to track the connections.

is this possible with the 881?

You can use a layer 2 switched port as a PPPoE client.    Create a vlan (SVI) for the port and apply your PPPoE configuration as you would to your WAN designated interface.

I suggest you use 15.x IOS.

Please see this document for what you can and can't do on the SVI interfaces.

Hi,

this would work even if you dont create a vlan and if you create a vlan. just keep it a layer 2.

Hi,

1) 1 router and 2WAN links: static default route tracking with IP SLA

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/ios/12_3/12_3x/12_3xe/feature/guide/dbackupx.html

2) 2 routers each with a WAN link going to different ISP: any FHRP like HSRP,VRRP or GLBP will do the trick with EOT using IP SLA

Ha cadet alain,

I am familiar with configuring one router for two wan connections. I have done this with a 2800 type routers. My question is wether this can also be done with a 881 router by using the integrated switch ports or are there some limitations.

Thank you for taking the time to respond.

Hi,

It should work with it as long as there is a L3 interface because you must work at layer 3 to do packet load balancing with the RIB.

Hi,

so my plan on using a VLAN interface and connecting the second WAN link to one of the switchports and placing that switchport in that same VLAN should work?

Hi,

Now that I think it over more deeply it surely wouldn't do for PPPoE as you must tie a dialer interface to a physical interface

but leaving the L2 and doing metroethernet should do but I've never used this technology so far so I would wait for experts to confirm.
