Failed 887V router has flashing cd light while no cable is plugged into dsl port

I had to swap out an 887V router this week as it stopped working after 4 months on a vdsl connection. I have observed that the cd light on this faulty router flashes constantly even when there are no cables connected to it (except for power of course). If I perform an administrative shut down of the vdsl controller, the cd light stops flashing.

I'm not sure, but I think it is fried. Can anyone suggest any tests or diagnostics which can help me investigate and explain the fault to the customer?

The flashing CD light only

The flashing CD light only indicates that the VDSL controller is still searching for a DSL carrier signal, so that's pretty normal if nothing is plugged into it. What information are you getting from the console at this point?

Hi Nezz, As Jody mentioned,

Hi Nezz,

As Jody mentioned, when the cd light keeps flashing would mean that the interface is still trying to synchronize with the DSLAM, that would be the normal behavior, instead when the cable is attached and the line is synchronized the light should stop flashing, it would become steady green.

VDSL2 Troubleshooting

Very-high-data-rate digital subscriber line 2 (VDSL2) is available on the Cisco 887 routers. If you experience trouble with the VDSL2 connection, verify the following:

  • The VDSL2 line is connected and using pins 3 and 4. For more information on the VDSL2 connection, see the hardware guide for your router.
  • The VDSL2 LED CD light is on. If it is not on, the router may not be connected to the DSL access multiplexer (DSLAM). For more information on the VDSL2 LED, see the hardware installation guide specific for your router.
  • The DSLAM supports the VDSL2 signaling protocol.

Use the show controllers vdsl 0 command in EXEC mode to view a VDSL2 configuration. The debug vdsl 0 daemon state command can be used to enable the debug messages that print the state transition of VDSL2 training.

If there is trouble with the VDSL firmware file, you can reload or upgrade it without upgrading your Cisco IOS image. Use the command:

controller vdsl 0 firmware flash:<firmware file name>

to load the firmware file into the VDSL modem chipset. Then enter shutdown/no shutdown commands on the controller vdsl 0 interface. After this, the new firmware will be downloaded and the VDSL2 line starts training up.
