Ftp speeds very low

Att---> Cust A ---> Cust B --->Cust c

We are Cust A and we get service from ATT and we provide service to Cust B where they have ftp server and cust B provides service to Cust C and When cust c is trying to download a file from ftp server,, speeds are 200KB and when cust B starts the connection or transfer,, speed is 5 meg, where as the link is of 50Meg.

We trid to check our network first and did not find any issue. and the traceroute shows the hop after our network which is to ATT is taking a long time... 30 msec to 300msec.

we even tried to provision another port at cust B and tried to hit the router at our end as we are providing service and the speeds are 40 Meg. and we ruled out our network.

Cust b and C are at the same location and switches in between.

We thought there might be firewall isue and no bandwidthe limiting any where in the network. no firewall isuue.

Even http speeds are low ,,

ATT claims,, there is nothing wrong,, we thought the way they are routing might be the issue.

We are out of ideas,, can u guys help us out coz cust c is very dissappinted with speeds.

Much appreciated

Re: Ftp speeds very low

Check for CRC errors on your interface. You could have a circuit issue towards ATT.

Can you post:

sh int | inc CRC|line protocol

Re: Ftp speeds very low

Try increasing the TCP window size on the end systems in question.

Re: Ftp speeds very low

Ya we have asked them to do that.

They said increasing the tcp window size made no difference

Re: Ftp speeds very low

Do I understand your post correctly? A and B sites have normal speeds, but C is slow in all internet applications? If that is correct the problem lies between B & C. Can you check those interfaces for errors, drops, etc? Are you rate limiting the speed to 50mb?

Re: Ftp speeds very low

We are not rate limiting any where.. Cust B is getting 50 Meg from ATT and Cust B is giving Internet to C without any rate limiting.

They checked the connection between B and C and there were no errors,, actually Cu B and C Equipment is at same location .

As i said we provisioned another Port at CU B equipment and tried it through Cu A equipment ,, without hitting ATT and speed was 40 Meg.

Thank you so much for ur response

Re: Ftp speeds very low

Typically the performance issues are noticed for the following reasons:

1. Always hard-cord the port speeds to and from the firewalls and router (no “Auto” business) you will be amazed with the speed improvement.

2. Packet de-fragmentation may be going on, make sure to enable the packet de-fragmentation (aka DF-bit)

3. Do a ping from source and target to see what the max MTU size is (ping -l 1400 target -f) this should tell you what you can push via the link. Default MTU is 1500 on Ethernet.

Thnx a lot for ur response ,,

Ya we dont have auto negotiation set any where and we did not see a palce where we are fragmenting the packets
