Q. With the maximum configuration for Switch Fabric Cards (SFCs) and Clock and Scheduler Cards (CSCs), what is the total capacity per slot?
A. Gigabit Route Processors (GRPs) and Line Cards (LCs) are installed from the front of the chassis and plug into a passive backplane. This backplane contains serial lines that interconnect all of the LCs to the switch fabric cards, as well as other connections for power and maintenance functions. Each 2.5 Gbps chassis slot (12008, 12012, 12016) has up to four serial line connections (1.25 Gbps), one to each of the SFCs to provide a total capacity of 5 Gbps per slot (2.5 Gbps full duplex). The 10 Gbps (12404, 12406, 12410 and 12416) use four sets of four serial line connections in each slot, providing each slot with a switching capacity of 20 Gbps full duplex.
Note: Actually, each LC has five serial line connections. One is for redundancy (it goes to the redundant card) and is the XOR of the data through the other SFCs for error correction. The same applies for the 124xx series.
