Hardware sizing to implement OSPF

Hi, I have a Cisco router 7206 with a NPE300 module with 128M of memory and a Catalyst 6509 with a MSFC2 module with 128M of memory. Is it enough to implement OSPF contend two areas, (0 and 1), with authentication between them and making routing of 1000 different sub-nets?

It may or may not be enough, depending on the number of OSPF adjacencies, the stability of your network and what other things you are running.

So how many adjacencies are you expecting to have on these routers ?

Probably 30 adjacenties routers.

From experience, the NPE-300 is capable of handling that many adjacencies and the number of routes is also not an issue.

However, it is extremely difficult to say that you will be absolutely okay without having an understanding of the particulars of your setup. Your best option is to try and simulate this up in a lab to get a feel for what the impact on the CPU is.

One of the major causes of CPU usage with OSPF is the SPF algorithm. If your network is relatively stable, SPF will not run that often and the overall impact of OSPF will be low. If that is not the case, the CPU will be hit harder.
